The Liberty, Boston: Former Charles Street Jails Re-opens as Luxury Hotel
This summer witnessed the debut of The Liberty Hotel in Boston, formerly the city’s most notorious jail. And there’s been a lot of buzz about this premier New England travel destination. Talk about “a landmark liberated!” This one-of-a-kind icon, newly renovated, showcases beautiful historic architecture and all the contemporary comforts expected at a refined, four-star hotel. Perfectly situated in the heart of Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood near the world’s best medical complexes, The Liberty Hotel provides river views from its ten incomparable suites. Of the 300 guest rooms, you can book a room in the original jail building, where 18 rooms feature exposed brick walls and mahogany furnishings. (Most of the rooms are located in a new, adjoining 16-storey tower– with oodles of modern conveniences.) The hotel’s public spaces are linked by historic catwalks– including lobby and reception areas, restaurant, bar, grand ballroom, and meeting rooms. Vestiges of jail cells have been preserved in the hotel lobby bar, ALIBI, which serves custom cocktails in a fabulous atmosphere. The hotel’s other distinctive eating and drinking venues include CLINK and Scampo, a contemporary Italian Restaurant run by Boston culinary legend and James Beard Award-winner, Chef Lydia Shire (due to open later this fall).
