Destination Penang, Malaysia: Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort

Foodies flock to Penang– the food capital of Malaysia– for sublime eats prepared by street vendors. Dishes like penang laksa (noodle soup), nasi kandar (mixed rice with curry), and rojak (a fruit and vegetable mix), reflect the fusion of cultures in Malaysia: a mix of Chinese, Indian, and Malay influences. Besides the allure of this mixed cultural heritage, Penang is an inviting destination because of its golden beaches, tropical scenery, and diverse sites found in this colonial trading capital. The best place to stay is Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort, set on the world-famous Batu Feringgi beach. George Town can be reached in an hour by complimentary shuttle from the resort. Beneath the shade of ancient rain trees in 30 acres of lush gardens, the luxury resort looks out over the emerald waters of the sea. The recreational offerings are numerous– from jungle treks to scuba diving– and the CHI spa is the best on the island.
