  1. Dear Mary:

We wanted to make you are aware of two key developments affecting Etihad Airways’ NY-Abu Dhabi Route.

Etihad now offers first and business class passengers free chauffeur service to and from JFK Airport. Etihad’s transportation partner, Empire International, provides service within a 70 mile radius of JFK in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

As of March 25, 2007, Etihad Airways will institute new flight times for its Abu Dhabi - New York route. Etihad flight EY100 will depart New York at 11:10 am , arriving the next day in Abu Dhabi at 7:40 am. The return flight, EY101, departs from Abu Dhabi International Airport daily at 2:00 am arriving into JFK Airport’s Terminal Four at 8:30 am the same day.

Link to release on PR Web: http://www.prweb.com//releases/Etihad/NYChauffeur/prweb504518.htm

If you are interested in speaking with Josephine Boulus, the Etihad U.S. manager, about the chauffeur service, please let me know. It’s yet another way Etihad elevates the guest experience both in flight and off.

    Sincerely,

    Carrie Smith

  3. Hi there! I wanted to spread the word about a great cause, the “2007 Trips for Cancer” campaign. As the only online travel auction of its kind, top luxury hotels such as Montage Laguna Beach Hotel (Laguna, CA), Princeville Resort (Kauai, HI), Park Hyatt Sydney (Australia), Hotel Guanahani & Spa (St Barts), Badrutt’s Palace (St. Moritz, Switzerland) as well as travel icons such as Continental Airlines have all donated packages to this year’s campaign.

Set to go live on March 1, auction participants can “make a donation, take a vacation” by bidding on these luxury travel packages. All proceeds of the 2007 Trips for Cancer campaign will be donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. You can visit www.tripsforcancer.com to view all of the great packages, many including spa, golf and restaurant incentives.

The Trips for Cancer idea began with Stacy Small. The cause is near and dear to her heart as she is dedicating this year’s campaign to her mother, a two-time breast cancer survivor and to her father, who passed away from cancer in 2006.

Any exposure you can provide is greatly appreciated. Link exchanges, briefs, pictures, trip promos, profile/trend story, or even forwarding the link to your colleagues - - with your help, she can reach even more people with this great story and allow them to “make a donation, take a vacation.”

The Washington Post also recently highlighted “Sherman’s Top 25” in its annual “Best of the Web.”

“With so many travel sites offering discount pricing for travel and destinations, it’s time- consuming and frustrating to navigate through all the deals online,” said James Sherman, Founder of ShermansTravel.com. “We’re thrilled that travelers have responded so positively to the newsletter and made it their top choice for trip planning and research.”

Sherman also attributed the upstart newsletter’s rapid success to syndication partnerships with web sites like MSNBC.com, MSN.com, Yahoo!, and USAToday.com, which has introduced ShermansTravel.com’s content to millions of new travelers. The successful 2006 launch of Sherman’s Travel, the first magazine for sophisticated, value-conscious travelers, has also contributed to subscriber growth, said Sherman.

  10. Hi Mary,
I thought you’d be interested in Crowne Plaza Hotels’ first national ad campaign. The spots appeal to those who like to catch a few rounds while traveling and showcase the brand’s new golf affinity marketing program. The ads feature an awesome cast of celebs and golf pros (including Lee Trevino, Alice Cooper and George Lopez) in an unscripted conversation about golf, travel, game secrets, etc. around a Crowne Plaza conference table.

The ads and some Web exclusive clips are at www.crowneplazapromotion.com/golf. My favorite ads are titled Wives and Rules, and favorite bonus clips are Lopez’s Moment, Exciting? and Test of Character.

If you have a slower connection, you may want to try watching them on YouTube.

Please contact me if you have questions and/or want more info.
    Thanks,
    Lauren

Steape launches mobile phone translators for travellers: Let your mobile phone speak a foreign language for you!

Amsterdam, 09 May 2007. Mobile-content producer, Steape launched their talking phrase books for mobile phones in the UK and the USA today. At the push of a button, travellers can easily communicate in a foreign language using an application on their mobile phone. The translators are already popular in the Netherlands, and are now also available in the UK and USA via the website: www.steape.com.
Steape translators are available in 17 languages and 272 language combinations, including versions communicating from one non-English language to another, e.g. Spanish to Russian. In addition to western languages such as English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, travellers can also make themselves heard in Mandarin, Russian, Korean, Arabic, Turkish, Polish, Czech and Japanese. The phrases come with both text and sound, meaning that travellers do not need to struggle with difficult pronunciation. The voices are recorded by native speakers and are played back via the phone’s speaker.
Three products are available: Mini-Speaking Dictionary, Steape Travel and Steape Knowledge. The Mini-Speaking Dictionary consists of 500 traveller-related words. Steape Travel contains nearly 100 phrases covering travel-related topics: Chat basics; Travel & Go; Small Talk; Overnight Accommodation; Money; Shopping; Flirting & Dating; Going Out & Sightseeing; Eating & Drinking; Help & Health and Service & Communication. Steape Knowledge is composed of useful basic vocabulary, such as numbers, days of the week etc., and is free when another product is purchased. The translators currently work on 138 mobile phones types, and the list grows continuously.

Marc van Bommel, CEO of Steape: “Have you ever been in a situation where no-one understands a word you’re saying? Frustrating, isn’t it? The most important aspect of our translation products is that they offer you exactly the words you need, at precisely the moment you need them. Also, the fun-factor of letting your mobile talk for you means that you can quickly break the ice and enjoy a conversation.”

  16. Hi Mary,

I wanted to share with you and your members a new service that just launched in Australia and was hoping that one of the informed traveler team may want to review the service.

Oodles.com offers is a fast and effective way for business travelers to compare car rental rates from 5 of the largest Car Rental Suppliers in Australia. It’s an impartial system that ranks rates based on their current live rates.

While your membership is predominantly US, there might be a few informed travelers willing to venture to the land down under.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to your feedback.

  22. Hi Mary

Here is our latest press release which might interest your readers. You might also like to paste http://vic.steape.com into your browser to see the animation.

    Wishing you a great day!

    Latest Press Release:
Steape launches an animated viral campaign to promote their travel translators.

August 08, 2007 –The intrepid Steape cartoon monkey, VIC, once again goes on an adventure abroad. This time VIC is on a quest to demonstrate to travellers the often hilarious - and sometimes disastrous - consequences of not using the Steape Travel translator in a foreign country. The game can be found at http://vic.steape.com

The viral campaign, titled “Shuh voodray err…” invites players to ‘help VIC talk his way through an evening of French cuisine’ by selecting his dinner attire, date, music and food. As VIC doesn’t speak French, the results are not quite what he – nor the player – expects.

Dimme van der Hout, Head Monkey, at Monkeybizniz, the creators of the campaign, comments: “When people don’t speak the same language miscommunication is inevitable. The online campaign uses the powers of animation, interaction and sound to generate that feeling of surprise and helplessness at not being able to articulate what you want in a foreign language.”

Throughout the animation, viewers witness various elements of surprise and hilarity centred on miscommunication. The closing scene, with the warning “School French can damage your health”, can be sent to friends and colleagues as an electronic postcard - further stimulating interaction and communication between people.

Marc van Bommel, CEO of Steape, comments: “Travellers are far more likely to enjoy their trip if they can communicate with the locals - but there’s only so much you can say with hand-signals. This is the beauty of Steape – travellers can effortlessly communicate in one of 17 languages using a simple application downloaded onto their mobile phone”.

Steape’s talking phrase books for mobile phones are available in the UK, USA and the Netherlands via the website: http://www.steape.com. The translators are available in 17 languages and 272 language combinations. The phrases have both text and sound, meaning that users do not need to struggle with difficult pronunciation. The voices recorded by native speakers are played back via the phone’s speaker. Three products are available: the Mini-Speaking Dictionary, Steape Travel and Steape Knowledge.

New Reviews of the Best Luxury Hotels in Guatemala and Honduras

Luxury travel is gaining steam in Central America. Premier site covering luxury travel in Latin America adds detailed independent reviews of top hotels and resorts in Guatemala and Honduras.

Miami, FL (PRWEB) August 6, 2007 — Luxury Latin America is now featuring reviews of the best upscale hotels in Guatemala and Honduras. These join existing reviews for eight other countries in the burgeoning tourism region of Central America and South America.

“Guatemala and Honduras are both on their way to attracting the kind of upscale travelers now flocking to nearby Costa Rica and Mexico,” says Timothy Scott, Editor of Luxury Latin America. “While these emerging destinations have only a few world-class hotels and resorts in place now, we’re encouraged by the steadily improving upscale boutique hotels of Guatemala and deluxe eco-lodges in Honduras.”

Surveys continually show that luxury travelers are looking for a more authentic experience and are eyeing destinations considered “off the beaten path” just a few years ago. As these trends continue to gain traction, the rising interest in unique destinations like Guatemala and Honduras is likely to accelerate. Both countries are experiencing increased air connections–including direct flights to the island of Roatan–plus ongoing infrastructure improvements.

    About Luxury Latin America:
Luxury Latin America provides detailed and authoritative travel information on luxury hotels and upscale tours in Mexico, Central America, and South America. All reviews and luxury tour features are written by experienced travel writers, keen observers who have experienced the trips and hotels first-hand. New Website Automatically Creates Master Travel Itineraries and Provides
Maps, Weather, Directions and Destination Information – With a “Social” Twist

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sept. 18, 2007 – Throw away that bulky manila folder – you know, the one with all the print-outs of your flight, hotel and rental car details, maps, directions, weather forecasts, and notes for your next trip. Now there’s TripIt (www.tripit.com) the first online service that automatically organizes all of your travel information into a master travel itinerary – no matter where you booked. Using TripIt itineraries, travelers can easily see their trip details wherever they happen to be, and instantly share them with the people who need to know.

Founded by Hotwire co-founder Gregg Brockway, former Hotwire executive Scott Hintz, and veteran software engineer Andy Denmark, TripIt was unveiled as a finalist at the exclusive TechCrunch40 (www.techcrunch40.com) conference this week in San Francisco. The service offers a new solution for the challenge of organizing your travel. Do-it-yourself travelers – those who research and buy direct from multiple travel providers – can now free themselves from the frustrating and time-consuming task of keeping track of all of the scattered information that comes with planning your own trip. Now, all travelers have to do is pack, print their TripIt itinerary, and go.

“We came up with the idea for TripIt because we were frustrated do-it-yourself travelers ourselves and know firsthand that using the Internet to make travel plans and organize the details is time consuming and difficult,” said Gregg Brockway, TripIt co-founder and president. “TripIt can do a lot of the dirty work of travel organization. Our goal is for TripIt to be like a great personal assistant and take care of all the details so that travelers don’t have to.“

Here’s how TripIt works: A traveler simply forwards their travel confirmation emails – no matter where they booked - and the TripIt “Itinerator” instantly incorporates them into their master itinerary. Then, TripIt puts that information to work on the traveler’s behalf by automatically anticipating basic needs to make the trip easier, such as adding daily weather, local maps and directions, helpful destination information and more by using information pulled from a variety of other popular websites. Travelers can then print out all their bookings neatly in a single document to take on their trip.

Once the itinerary is created, TripIt leverages the power of social networks to further enrich the travel planning experience. With TripIt, it’s easy to share and collaborate on trips with friends, family and colleagues. TripIt users can also create networks of TripIt “Friends” who are able to see each other’s travel calendars, which is ideal for frequent travelers.

TripIt integrates with the applications people use most, so travelers can access their information when and where they need it – online, printed, via mobile, or in a calendar. Additionally, once trips are over, TripIt is a great way to store and share details about past trips, so travelers don’t need to sift through dozens of emails to replicate a vacation they loved, or give recommendations to friends. TripIt is a free service and travelers can get started by visiting www.tripit.com to learn more, or by simply forwarding a travel confirmation email to plans@tripit.com.

    About TripIt

Based in San Francisco and founded in October 2006, TripIt’s mission is to simplify the online travel experience. By automatically creating master itineraries with travel plans, daily weather, local maps and directions, city guides and more, the unique online service helps do-it-yourself travelers organize their travel plans so that their trips go more smoothly. TripIt allows travelers to print or access their trip plans from anywhere – and to share itineraries and travel calendars with friends in their TripIt social network. More at www.tripit.com.

  34. Once a year the editors of Luxury SpaFinder pen unabashed love letters to the spas that spark their passions – from Nam Hai in Vietnam to Royal Palms in Arizona.

To help your readers discover 60 of the world’s best spas, Luxury SpaFinder has created an interactive map as a fun way to scan the globe, pick a destination, and learn more about it (http://www.spafinder.com/spaswelove). Using the latest version of Microsoft® Virtual Earth™ technology, readers will be able to instantly learn details about the spa that’s perfect for them.

The 60 spas are sorted into six categories including:

    • DAMN THE EXPENSE: PRICEY SPAS THAT PAY OFF
The bill may be as stunning as the decor, but these spas are worth every pretty penny. Luxury SpaFinder salutes its dearest indulgences, from the $8,000-$12,000 per night Private Reserve at Soneva Gili in the Maldives, accessible only by boat and with its own spa and butlers, to Mexico’s Las Ventanas al Paraiso, whose Total Spa Lifestyle Program/Fitness ($13,425 for four nights) includes your very own personal staff of trainers and therapists and a gorgeous two-bedroom suite with its own massage room.

    • URBAN SANCTUARIES: CITY ESCAPES IN THE CITY
Sometimes sanctuary is only a cab ride away. Even the reception area of the spa at Prague’s Mandarin Oriental inspires quiet contemplation – in keeping with the14th-century building it occupies, a former convent-turned-monastery. In Chicago, the Peninsula boasts the Miracle Mile’s largest hotel spa, where guests can enjoy a Thai massage in a glass-walled studio twenty stories above the city.

    • CULTURAL IMMERSION: LOCAL FLAVOR
At Bali’s Hotel Tugu, the spa blends its own products, and the star therapist is a former laundry-room staffer who revealed a gift for a type of massage punctuated by prayer. Bathing is elevated to an art form at Japan’s Gora Kadan, which offers visitors an escape not just from the 21st century, but from the 20th, too.

Other categories include: Design Showstoppers, Domestic Bliss, and Exotic Hideways. The magazine’s contributing editors also chose spas they love in their respective areas of expertise: PoundWise columnist Susan Crandell “weighed in” on her three favorite fitness faves, and value-loving spa spy “Vera Value” fell hard for five deals she found.

Please let me know if you’d like an interview with Gary Walther about how the magazine chose their Top 60 or why they left your favorite spa off the list. I’m also happy to send you a copy of the latest issue.

    Thanks!

  40. Why choose choose a short term apartment rental over a hotel room?

A short term apartment rental can be a great alternative to a hotel room. You can get more privacy, space and amenities. It is an especially attractive option for groups and families, as you do not need to rent multiple rooms which may not even be near each other.
Luxury rentals can be an especially attractive option as they are not only quite affordable compared to similar hotels but you can have spectacular amenities and experience special and unique surroundings since many luxury flats are in buildingso f architectural interest.
Short term apartment come fully equipped with linens, bath towels, kitchen, TVs, VCRs and stereos and more. Some offer swimming pools tennis courts and even children´s play areas.
Apartment rentals are becoming a more popular way to meet accommodation needs while traveling. If you plan a visit to Barcelona, Madrid or Lisbon, be sure to visit www.Rent-City-Apartments for fabulous rental options.

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

ADRIATIC LUXURY JOURNEYS Offers Complete Line Of Luxury Travel Programs Exclusively To Croatia!

Adriatic Luxury Journeys (ALJ) launched its exciting new travel programs to Croatia and the Adriatic coast at the recent Luxury Travel Expo in Las Vegas, on December 4-6, 2007. The Croatia Luxury Brochure for 2008 consists of uniquely escorted and independent itineraries created in response to the increased demand for upscale travel to Croatia from the American market.

Adriatic Luxury Journeys is the only tour operating company in the United States specializing in luxury travel to Croatia. They exclusively offer a wide selection of luxury journeys such as small group escorted tours. Plus a variety of independent journeys that include private tours, honeymoons, boutique journeys, fly-drive vacations, and tailor-made programs for every tourist’s discriminating taste.

“For a few years now we have been assisting some of the most discerning travelers in designing their out of the ordinary vacations to Croatia and the Adriatic coast,” said Maria M. Kuchan, CEO of Adriatic Luxury Journeys.

“However,” she added, “we have successfully met highly-effective logistical planning that even we thought was not possible at that time in Croatia. Often all we had were extravagant expectations from clients, a moment’s notice in peak season, and a lot of good will to perform tasks we knew no other company would consider doing.”

Sometimes the challenge for ALJ was finding a six-bedroom beachfront villa on a Croatian island with a yacht, an available swimming pool, a special private chauffeur or chef, or even a babysitter. Not to mention lining up guides for sightseeing tours at the spur of the moment.

“These are all difficult tasks to be completed within only a few days’ notice, and way beyond the sort of thorough, diligent planning that usually is done in more than just two days. But we always came through! And when a client called our office from his private yacht to just reschedule a wine tour, for example, we knew we could devise a recipe to make it all work”, concluded Maria M. Kuchan.

Croatia has progressively defined itself as an attractive and exciting destination for upscale travel. More then ten new 5-star hotels including small and boutique hotels, and a growing number of luxury villas opened for business in the past couple of years. Croatia is the “in place” where one can still find luxury accommodation in seclusion, relax or enjoy plenty of activities (from sailing, diving, kayaking, hiking, biking, sightseeing, etc), experience upscale authentic and international cuisine and a variety of entertainment. A carefully designed selection of ALJ’s signature itineraries such as Croatia in Style and Croatia Adventure will certainly prove to be an ideal choice for an extraordinary vacation.

Consider ALJ’s 15-day luxury escorted journey, “Art, History and Charm of Croatia and the Adriatic,” which explores fascinating periods of Croatian history, art and culture in an elegant and unique style. Guests on this tour experience the natural beauty and artistic heritage of Croatia in a most luxurious manner. They also are pampered and surprised with an abundance of Croatia’s finest food, wine and entertainment each and every day of their trip!

This itinerary is filled with days reserved for meeting renowned Croatian painters and sculptors. And also chatting with well-known Croatian-American actors, plus sampling scrumptious delicacies prepared by award-winning chefs. The highlight of this small-group tour is a private concert in Dubrovnik, performed by opera star Tihana Herceg. Croatian mezzo-soprano Herceg has performed to great acclaim throughout the United States and her native Croatia. This tour has departures on June 11 and September 3, 2008, but is limited to 24 participants per tour.

  49. Just thought I would write in and tell you about this new book Ijust discovered on the website www.greatgrandfamous.com - thought you might find it interesting!

The book is Great, Grand & Famous Hotels and it entices more people to seek out the world’s great, grand and famous hotels, and to stay in them for an unforgettable experience.
The book lets you take a peek inside the hotel walls to discover a treasure trove of famous or forgotten anecdotes. You learn of the dramas that have unfolded in lobbies, dining rooms, bars and ballrooms, or behind the closed doors of guest rooms and Presidential Suites. It also profiles those who made these hotels what they are: daring financiers, visionary owners, inventive architects, cutting-edge designers, devoted hoteliers, renowned chefs, the visionaries who are creating the great hotels of the future and of course all of the celebrity guests who have graced their walls.

As quoted from the book: Great, grand and famous hotels have never been merely places to get a bed for the night – they are places where historic weddings are held, Prime Ministers are created, Nobel Prize winners announced and political opponents assassinated. ”

“It is the guests, many famous, some infamous, who bring our hotels alive, and in this book we will tell many stories. Some are sad, some funny, and most of them have a quirky twist.”

Great, Grand & Famous Hotels travellers a better understanding of, and closer insight into, the hotels we admire and love.

It has definitely enticed me to seek out the great, grand and famous hotels, and to stay in them for the experience, not just as a place to spend the night.

  50. Dear Mary.

I wanted to make you aware that my company’s product, the Sunscreen Mist Booth (www.sunscreenmist.com) located at the Westin Diplomat in Holywood, FL was recently featured on the Miami Fox affiliates prime time news show “Deco Drive.”

Here is the link to the story on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HdscLWUmA8

Our Spray-on sunscreen vending Booth and smaller wand based station solve the dirty little secret of sunscreen business. The vast majority of people only apply 25%-50% of the sunscreen needed to protect themselves if they don’t miss spots entirely. No matter whether the user puts on chemical screens or physical blockers, sprays it on or rubs it in, it simply won’t work if it is not applied correctly or in the proper amount. Sunscreen Mist Systems dose users with at least 1 oz. of FDA approved sunscreens from either Ocean Potion (www.opotion.com) or Norvell. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to learn more about our products and how they are being featured at outdoor locations including the MGM Grand Las Vegas, Westin Diplomat, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and time shares and water parks.

    Press Release

GRAN HOTEL BAHÍA DEL DUQUE LAUNCHES ULTRA EXCLUSIVE VILLAS AND SPA

Spain, June 2007 – In 2008 the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque completed the first phase of its expansion plan. In January 40 stunning villas were inaugurated. These 40 residences have been decorated by the prestigious designer Pascua Ortega, combining the latest trends in design with luxury and comfort.

Each one of these Villas encompasses a private swimming pool and a garden with tropical and subtropical vegetation. The interior is highlighted by exotic bedrooms and spectacular bathrooms set in basaltic stone, creating an atmosphere of wellbeing and relaxation. This private area of the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque has an exclusive reception and butler service as well as a solarium and swimming pool.

The complete service offered by the Villas includes details such as meals prepared in the villa by a private chef, à la carte aromatherapy baths, state of the art Bang&Olufsen music equipment and a fully equipped bar. Completing this picture is the Las Aguas restaurant, run by one of Spain’s best chefs, Salvador Gallego, holder of a Michelin Star.

The restaurant offers a unique and tranquil environment, where an exquisite dining selection and a fine wine cellar are accompanied by the most relaxing of views. Salvador Gallego develops a cuisine that relies primarily on quality of product and integrates his experiences gathered in Spain, France and the UK.

The second phase of the development plan will see the opening of the impressive new Spa of the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque at the end of 2008. Uniting the hotel’s high standards with the expertise of the Spa consultancy ESPA, the retreat combines state of the art spa and Thalasso facilities with unique design features ensuring it will become the ultimate spa retreat in the Canary Islands.

Located over 3 spacious levels covering 3.500m2, each area makes the most of the temperate Tenerife climate by incorporating indoor and outdoor spaces to create a sense of relaxation and tranquillity.

ESPA has created a treatment offering for Bahia del Duque blending the best of ancient and modern methods, using philosophy from Ayurveda, Chinese and European practices and incorporating the use of hot stone therapy and advances massage techniques.

  58. Hi - I enjoy your blog very much. I just wanted to let you know that the much-publicized Leading Hotels of the World 1928 promotion seemed to be a complete disaster. I, along with several people I know, couldn’t access the site at all during the brief time the promotion was available.

LHW has posted an apology on their website but I think they should do more to make it up to their loyal customers who wasted 80 minutes of their time this morning.

    Thanks very much,

KING PACIFIC LODGE WINS BEST RESORT IN CANADA &
FOURTH BEST OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD
IN CONDÉ NAST TRAVELER’S 21st ANNUAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS

PRINCESS ROYAL ISLAND, GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST, BC, CANADA (October 16, 2008) – The readers of Condé Nast Traveler have named King Pacific Lodge, A Rosewood Resort, a winner as Best Resort in Canada and the Fourth Best of the Best among all resorts, hotels and cruise lines in the world in the magazine‘s 21st Annual Readers‘ Choice Awards. The awards are derived from the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Survey, the largest independent poll of consumers’ preferences. Over 32,000 readers voted this year.

King Pacific Lodge is anchored in Barnard Harbor along the shores of Princess Royal Island in British Columbia, Canada; about 680 miles north of Vancouver. The island has no permanent inhabitants or structures and this highly sensitive environment is in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, the world’s largest remaining tract of temperate rainforest. The floating luxury wilderness lodge is built of native pine, fir, cedar and stone and offers only 17 guest-rooms and suites, a wrap-around deck with spectacular views along with award winning cuisine and spa.

“King Pacific Lodge has long been noted for its luxury and quality to be sure. But, we have paid particular attention to our role in creating social equity and conservation. More and more, the travelers of today want more and more: more knowledge, more connection to the places they visit, more authenticity and more opportunities to see a world they could have easily missed. King Pacific’s essential mission as a triple bottom line company naturally creates a rich texture in its relationship with Hartley Bay and summons us to our obligations as co-stewards in maintaining the integrity of the Gitga’at Territory. It is something that imbues all that we do,” said Michael Uehara, president of King Pacific Lodge.

Uehara continued, “I believe that this vision, combined with our unique brand of service, has captured the imagination of our guests. The opportunity to see a true expression of tourism’s role in delivering public goods provides our guests a context not just for unique experiences but to bear witness to and be a small part of the transformation of both an industry and their own role in it. Yes, I think our guests understand that we must be as aware of fish counts as we are of thread counts, and that a 10,000 year old culture can give them a new way of looking at the world. I truly believe that many of our guests may start off with a list of things they must see and end up with an experience they must feel. They too adopt a proprietary connection to the land as distant, honorary citizens of the Gitga’at.”

“These awards celebrate the destinations, lodgings, and modes of transportation that manage to exceed our expectations,” said Condé Nast Traveler Editor in Chief Klara Glowczewska. “The Readers’ Choice Awards, with over 32,000 readers voting, are a credit to the worldly expertise of our readers—passionate travelers for whom no island is too remote, no city too challenging, and no hotel too untested.”

The complete results of the awards can be found in the November issue of Condé Nast Traveler, on newsstands October 21st or on the magazine’s website at cntraveler.com. The Readers Choice Awards gala took place on Wednesday, October 15th in New York City at the New York Public Library. Photos and video from the event are available upon request.

  65. Hi Mary,

We wanted tomake you aware of a fantastic new book that we have just launched called Waldorf Hysteria: Hotel Manners, Misbehaviour & Minibars.

 What goes on behind the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign?
 What do people leave behind in hotel rooms?
 Which hotel bar serves the most expensive cocktail?
 Which celebrities have been banned from hotels?

Waldorf Hysteria, presented by Fritz Gubler, author of Great, Grand & Famous Hotels (2008), is a fascinating, hilarious and entertaining account of more than a century of funny hotel stories and anecdotes, hotel mishaps, outrageous requests, ‘guests from hell’, hotel etiquette, sex scandal, and celebrity.

Hidden behind hotel doors, dramatic acts of love and deception, of pride, spite and rivalry, are played out. Lovers find refuge and famous personalities find a place to hide from the ever-chasing public and the relentless paparazzi.

Royals have been born, political opponents assassinated and famous personalities passed away in hotel rooms. Books have been written and state secrets passed between spies and undercover agents. Private parties for all occasions, hen and bucks’ nights, birthday parties, anniversaries and successes of all kind are celebrated in hotel rooms. It is the boys nights out that have traditionally generated the most noise complaints and been a real headache for any duty manager, but girls’ nights out can give them a run for their money these days.

A recent study revealed that three million Britons have damaged property when visiting hotels. Hotel guests have broken more than 300,000 beds and four out of five have taken something as a memento of their stay.

Meanwhile the guests travelling incognito, the famous, the once famous and the secret lovers, try desperately not to be seen, however their nervous, wandering eyes make them immediately noticeable, which makes them even more nervous and even more visible. The wannabes, desperate for fame, are the most difficult guests because they will do anything to stand out from the crowd. Their usual modus operandi is to make a scene at reception, complaining loudly about the service in a bid to be noticed.

In Waldorf Hysteria you will discover that some of the best stories come from the misadventures, the pratfalls, faux pas, the bad behaviour, eccentric guests, the prying paparazzi and the celebrities that are encountered in hotels.

With fascinating photographs from multiple photo library archives, hotel etiquette advice from long ago, and even a few cocktail recipes, this book is a celebration of the lighter side of hotels.

To find out more or to purchase Waldorf Hysteria, visit www.greatgrandfamous.com.

  66. I will be traveling to Mexico in a week and after hearing your show this morning on QR77, I have a question regarding transport of medication. I use several medications and would like information on the best way to transport the meds in order not to have them taken from me or questioned on them. For example, should I carry them in the original plastic containers that I get from the drug store, can I carry them loose in the multi compartment daily dosage container that I seperate them into for daily use, should I carry the prescription that the Dr. gave me (this is impossible as the druggist keeps the written script). Please advise

  74. Hi Mary, I’m writing to tell you about a new travel company that really embodies what private aviation needs to become in order to survive in the current economic climate.

When looking at private aviation in the current economy, the urge is to ask: “does the world still need this?”

Enter Fame Route— a membership-based private travel club launching this month. The public backlash against private aviation and luxury travel is evidence that the old charter model is wrong for present state of the world. Fame Route is a third option that exists between commercial and private aviation, and it services an untapped third market of Americans who are not private jet owners, are not fractional owners, and who seek another travel and aviation option.

Fame Route’s monthly membership cost is $1,000, in addition to a $500 dollar annual surcharge, and each round trip flight costs between $3500 and $5000 dollars. This comes out to roughly $17,000 for a year membership. On the other hand, a traditional round trip charter flight from New York to Los Angeles costs upward of $30,000.

Even if it initially loses money on its cheap flights, Fame Route will recoup all of its expenses through the reasonable membership fee. In addition to reducing costs, this shared model reduces the carbon footprint of private flight. Furthermore, Fame Route saves in maintenance costs by employing planes and equipment owned by external companies.

This week, Fame Route launches at www.fameroute.com. This is carpooling for serious business travelers, and it promises to finally bring moderation and good sense to a type of travel that has too long been a symbol of excess and irresponsibility.

EPIC’s ACCLAIMED 16th FLOOR POOL DECK OFFERS A COSMOPOLITAN RETREAT

Giving downtown Miami’s new EPIC hotel a resort-like vibe, is its stunning “island-in-the-sky” pool deck. A signature amenity of the hotel described by one local as a “showstopper, offering Blade Runner-esque views of Miami”, the deck elicits an audible gasp of amazement from first-timers the moment they step out onto the pool area.

Sitting 16 floors above sea level overlooking the “Magic City”, EPIC’s 13,752-square-foot wrap-around pool deck provides an oasis by day and a pulsating hot spot at night.

Recently named one of Travel + Leisure’s top eight favorite hotel rooftop bars, EPIC’s pool deck is a cosmopolitan retreat that offers spectacular, glimmering views of both Biscayne Bay and the city skyline.

At the pool deck, guests can relax and lounge any way they choose - in style, on one of the stylish day beds surrounding the two glass mosaic infinity pools, or on ample chaises, ottomans and benches that comfortably seat small and large groups. Light blue cushions juxtaposed against bronze brown woven resin seating areas create splashes of color. And for those seeking a more private experience, ten airy cabanas (pictured left), provide intimacy and comfort for those seeking an escape from the sun.

After dark, the lights of the city below and moon above the bay create a truly spectacular gathering place — making EPIC’s pool deck an idyllic spot for special events and functions.

Guests can also enjoy a range of tantalizing menu items and refreshing cocktails from the poolside menu, including one of its specialties, the EPIC Sunset, made from Belvedere Pomarancza, Grand Marnier, Campari, and passion fruit.
